Attabad Lake, nestled in the heart of northern Pakistan, is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. This stunning lake, also known as Gojal Lake, was formed in 2010 due to a massive landslide that blocked the Hunza River. The result? A breathtaking lake with waters so turquoise they seem unreal

Attabad Lake Hunza: My Travelogue to A Paradise Valley

It was a full, bright day in Doha, Qatar. I was fed up with my busy work routine here in Doha. As you all know very well, the cities in Qatar never go to sleep. I decided to take a break from my busy life to spend some time with nature to smooth my nerves. This idea led me to return to my homeland, Pakistan. I booked my tickets, decided to go back to Pakistan, and planned to explore the beautiful northern sites of Pakistan.I shared this idea with my friends, who got so excited to join me on this trip. My excitement was at its peak. I wish I could have wings to fly as soon as possible to my beautiful motherland and the serene places where I spent my childhood. However, I had to wait until I landed in Pakistan.

Flight from Doha to Islamabad

In March 2019, I booked my ticket to Islamabad. On my way to Islamabad,I lost myself in the memories of the past. When I was young enough, we friends had a melodious get-together every night in the beautiful mountains of Buner. The charming music of “Rabab” (a musical instrument) was playing in my mind. I remembered the time when I was among the enchanting mountains of Swat and Buner In fact, it would not be wrong to say that when mountains grew, love was enriched in my heart. No doubt, I always missed my old days when I freely walked among the grassy mountains of Sawat with enchanting water springs.

Tour Destinations:

hunza Valley Gilgit

We three friends—Irfanullah, Dr. Latif, and me—marked our destination. We had to travel and explore Gilgit, Kashmir, and the beautiful KPK. The destination was Attabad, Hunza It was a full trip of 10 days in Gilgit. After landing at Islamabad International Airport, we had planned to stay in my hometown, Buner, for a minimum of 3 days. As you know, the hectic, continuous air travel makes you feel tired.

Buner to Shangla

Buner to Shangla

As planned, we had to take the route to Gilgit from Buner. For convenience, we decided to use our personal car for this tour. This decision helped us stay and explore a greater number of places on our routes. Before leaving Buner, we finished a wonderful breakfast in the Sawari Bazar of Buner. Later, we fueled our car in Shangla. We were very excited to visit the greenish valleys of Pakistan. I felt myself drowning in these serene landscapes. We stopped our car in Shangla. The fresh air was making me so relaxed that I can feel it right now. We three walk through this beautiful valley. The silent mountains, covered with green blankets, were giving the sleeping doses. We played in the fresh water of the springs. We prepared a good tea in the surrounding mountains. It was so amazing to feel this beauty. After spending 3 hours in Shangla, we decided to set off for our next destination, the beautiful Gilgit.

On the way to Kohistan:

Now we were on the way to Koshitan. From Shangla, our next route was toward Bisham City. Gilgit is nearly 8 hours and 3 minutes away from Bisham. We had earlier decided to move gradually towards our marked destination as we had to stop and enjoy this beautiful haven on earth. We passed through the Indus River, Kohistan, Chalas, and Jalipur. The roads were somewhat hard to travel due to under-construction activities. After a 5-hour ride, we reached Chalas. The enchanting weather in Chalas was awesome. Here, we had a night’s stay. Our friend was already waiting for us. He had booked a room for us in his hotel and served a good meal. Unfortunately, I was 12 at night due to a flat tire on the way. Thank God we reached finally! We spent a night here in Gani. The next morning, I was waiting for another adventurous site.

From Chalas to Gilgit:

We thanked our friend for this hospitality and offered him goodbye. At 8 o’clock, we restarted our journey. Now our destination was on the way happily. Our hearts were full of joy and filled with love for the beautiful valley of Gilgit. After leaving Chalas for Ganni, we turned our car toward Gunar. Gunar is also known as “safe heaven”. We took a tea break in Gunar and then chit-chatted with local people to explore the beautiful culture as well as the beauty of this valley. As we were exhausted, we decided to have a meal first to refill our energy. Nanga Parbat is the most charming hotel on the way to Gilgit. We decided to have lunch there. After a continuous drive of 3 hours on different routes, we finally reached Gilgit.

Exploring Attabad Lake

Attabad Lake

We are now so close to our destination. Attabad Lake is 3 hours away from Gilgit. Finally, after so much patience, we reached Attabad Lake at 4 PM. After spending about four hours admiring the views, we enjoyed the clear water and the charming, heartwarming valley covered with mountains and clouds It was a sight I had never seen before in my life. I can never forget those views. I can’t!Boating is a must for such destinations. However, there was a little issue during our boating on the lake. We had traveled in March, and the weather had turned quite cold, with some areas covered in ice. Nonetheless, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Our only regret was that we wished we had visited during June or July to experience the best road trip.

Attabad Lake to the China border:

Following our visit to Attabad Lake, we planned a trip to the China border, a remarkable place that attracts thousands of visitors every year. It’s a fantastic highway surrounded by stunning mountains We drove towards Khunjerab, but due to snowfall, we couldn’t reach the border. Nevertheless, the best thing about this region is that you can capture the beauty of the mountains and the wildlife, especially “Markhor,” on the roadside with your camera. The security and the hospitality of the locals in this area are excellent. You can enjoy a peaceful and safe stay there. After spending about four days in Hunza, we returned via the Gilgit to Swat Road, concluding our unforgettable road trip.
